Chelsea have made an approach to sign Olivier Giroud from Arsenal, according to reports.
The Premier League champions are looking to strengthen in the January transfer window and are specifically targeting a new striker as well as a left-sided defender. Chelsea have been in talks with Roma to sign Emerson Palmieri and Edin Dzeko, but the deal for both players is threatening to fall through. While Chelsea are closer to signing Palmieri, their deal to sign Dzeko is much more complex and the former Manchester City striker is yet to agree terms with the Premier League champions.
Chelsea are reluctant to offer Dzeko, who turns 32 in March, a contract beyond 2019, even though his current deal with Roma runs until 2020.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Chelsea are still in the market for alternatives to Dzeko and have made an enquiry to sign Giroud on loan from Arsenal for the remainder of the season. Borussia Dortmund also want the 31-year-old to be included as part of their deal to sell Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Arsenal.
But the Gunners are reluctant to let Giroud leave, even though the striker is concerned that his lack of playing time could harm his chances of making France’s squad for the World Cup this summer. Chelsea, meanwhile, will continue talks with Dzeko and will attempt to sign the Bosnian before the January window closes.
