Jurgen Klopp React To Saturday FA Cup

Jurgen Klopp admits West Brom deserved to dump Liverpool out of the FA Cup

A gutted Jurgen Klopp has laid into his Liverpool players after the Reds were knocked out of the FA Cup by West Brom.

The Baggies battled back from 1-0 down to beat Liverpool 3-2 at Anfield and dump the seven-time winners out of the competition in the fourth round. It was a Liverpool performance strewn with errors at the back, while Roberto Firmino missed a penalty with the game at 2-1.

It is the second loss in a row for Klopp’s side and the Liverpool manager was visibly down in his post-match interview. He said: ‘It’s obvious what we did wrong in these situations. The second goal was just, wow, really bad defending from the whole group. That’s not how defending should be. ‘We didn’t use the chance on the penalty and then their third goal must be off-side. What can you do?

‘We had to show character in the second-half. We chased the game and maybe scored the second goal too late. When you start how we did you cannot play your best football game. ‘They tried to save some time – which was normal – and in the end, West Brom deserve it because they scored three goals and we only scored two. ‘They did well and fought with passion. But we have only ourselves to blame.’

Firmino put the home side in front after just five minutes thanks to a mistake from Jonny Evans, but two quick West Brom goals turned the game on it’s head. VAR played a massive part in the enthralling game, but Liverpool failed to grow into the game and could not build on Mohamed Salah’s strike that cut the deficit to one goal in the 78th minute. The loss at Anfield was also the first time Liverpool have been beaten at home since April.
