Last Swansea beat Liverpool
Liverpool were stunned by bottom club Swansea City as Alfie Mawson’s first-half finish condemned Jurgen Klopp’s side to a first defeat in 19 league and cup games.
The visitors wasted a string of chances, including Roberto Firmino heading against a post in the closing moments.
Mohamed Salah volleyed another opportunity over and Sadio Mane lashed a first-time shot wide as wasteful Liverpool, who have 85 goals in 34 league and cup games, failed to score for only the fourth time in the league this season.
Swansea’s first home league win under Carlos Carvalhal came after a headed clearance by Virgil van Dijk, who was making his first league start for Liverpool, hit Federico Fernandez and rolled into the path of defender Mawson who hammered home.
The Swans, who have seven points in four games under Portuguese Carvalhal, remain at the foot of the table but just six points now separate the bottom 11 teams.
Fourth-placed Liverpool are three points behind third-placed Chelsea after a disappointing display.
Swansea have beaten Liverpool in three of the past five Premier League meetings.
